The Santa Elena Peninsula is a photographer's dream — dramatic clifftop scenery, colorful fishing villages, world-class surfing action, abundant wildlife, and spectacular Pacific sunsets create an almost unlimited range of photographic subjects.
Landscape Photography
Best landscape spots:
- Olón Church Mirador — Iconic cliff-top chapel with ocean views; one of Ecuador's most photographed spots
- Punta Carnero — Headland with dramatic cliff and wave views
- La Rinconada Cliffs / White Cliffs — White sedimentary cliffs against deep blue Pacific
- REMACOPSE / La Chocolatera — Sea stacks, crashing waves, wildlife
- Manglaralto Estuary — Golden light through mangrove channels at dawn/dusk
Sunset Photography
The Peninsula faces west over the open Pacific — sunsets are spectacular, particularly from elevated viewpoints. Best sunset spots:
- Mirador Caracol and El Mirador (La Libertad)
- Curia Clifftop (La Libertad)
- Punta Carnero headland
- Olón Church Mirador
Wildlife Photography
- Sea lions — REMACOPSE area; approachable but maintain respectful distance
- Seabirds (frigatebirds, boobies, pelicans) — Clifftops and offshore rocks
- Humboldt Penguins — Cold season (Aug–Oct) near southern cliffs
- Humpback Whales — June–September offshore; boat trips recommended
- Reef fish / marine life — Snorkeling at Ayangue with underwater camera
Surf Photography
Montañita Main Break is the best surfing action photography location. Shooting from the beach during the wet season provides excellent action shots. A telephoto lens (200mm+) is ideal from shore; water photography requires a housing.
Street and Cultural Photography
- La Libertad mercado (market) at dawn — fresh produce and fish
- Fishing villages (Anconcito, Ayangue) in early morning as fishermen return
- Fiestas patronales — traditional dress and processions
Drone Photography
Drones require registration and flight permits in Ecuador (administered by DGAC — Dirección General de Aviación Civil). Flying near military installations (including Salinas naval base area) is prohibited. Always check regulations before flying.
