Best Spot For...
Snorkeling Ayangue. No contest. Surfing Montañita main break. Lessons available year-round. Hiking Loma Alta Reserve via Dos Mangas. Go with a local guide. Whales Las Tunas and La Rinconada. Jun–Sep, morning hours. Horses San José. Low tide. Ask in town. Birdwatch La Rinconada cliffs. Ayampe forest at dawn. Do nothing Olón. Big beach, few people, no pressure.
Good to Know
Montañita surf is not for beginners without instruction. The shore break is fast. Take a lesson first.
Loma Alta Reserve requires entering through Dos Mangas village. Hire a local guide — the trails are not well marked and the forest is dense.
Ayangue is protected by a headland on both sides. Currents are minimal year-round — it's genuinely safe for families and non-swimmers.
Getting between towns is easy — frequent buses run the E-15 all day. Flag one down from the roadside.
High season (Dec–May): Montañita fills completely. Everything else on the route is much quieter and significantly cheaper.
🚑 Emergency
General: 911
Nearest hospital: La Libertad or Santa Elena
Montañita has a basic health subcentro.
