ECUAWIKI › LIVING ON THE PENINSULA › MOBILE DATA
Mobile data in Ecuador is affordable and generally reliable along the Santa Elena Peninsula. The three main carriers are Claro (América Móvil), Movistar (Telefónica), and CNT (state-owned). Coverage quality varies by carrier and location.
Coverage on the Peninsula
Claro has the strongest and most consistent 4G LTE coverage across the Peninsula, including in smaller towns like Ayampe, Colonche, and along the coastal highway. Claro is the recommended carrier for those who travel frequently around the region.
Movistar offers good coverage in major towns (Salinas, La Libertad, Santa Elena, Montañita) but may be weaker in rural or cliff-side areas.
CNT (Corporación Nacional de Telecomunicaciones) has improving coverage and tends to be cheapest. Good for stationary use in towns; less reliable on remote stretches.
Getting a SIM Card
SIM cards are available from carrier stores and many convenience shops. You will need:
- Your passport or cédula for registration (required by law)
- $1–$3 for the SIM card itself
Carrier stores are found in La Libertad (main shopping area), Santa Elena city center, and Salinas. Claro, Movistar, and CNT all have official stores in La Libertad.
Data Plans and Recharges
All three carriers operate on a prepaid (recarga) model for most individual users. Plans are recharged via physical scratch cards, carrier apps, or via online banking.
| Carrier | Plan | Data | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claro | Recarga Diaria | 1 GB/day | ~$1 |
| Claro | Plan Semanal | 5 GB/week | ~$4 |
| Claro | Plan Mensual | 15–30 GB/month | $8–$15 |
| Movistar | Recarga | 5 GB/7 days | $4 |
| Movistar | Plan Mensual | 20 GB/month | $10–$15 |
| CNT | Plan Mensual | 15 GB/month | $7–$12 |
Prices vary and are subject to promotional changes. Check carrier apps or websites for current offers.
Using a Foreign SIM / Roaming
If you are visiting short-term, roaming with a home carrier is possible but expensive. Most visitors purchase a local SIM on arrival for far better value. Ecuador uses standard nano-SIM and eSIM cards (eSIM availability expanding with Claro and Movistar).
Mobile Data vs. WiFi
For heavy internet users (streaming, video calls, remote work), mobile data alone may not be sufficient. See Getting Internet Installed for home fiber/cable internet options. See WiFi Hotspots for public WiFi locations across the Peninsula.
