Online banking (banca en línea) is well-developed in Ecuador. All major banks offer internet banking and mobile apps, allowing account holders to manage their finances, pay bills, and transfer money without visiting a branch.

  • Banco del Pacífico — state bank; widely used; strong app
  • Banco de Guayaquil — private; popular in Guayas and Peninsula region
  • Produbanco — private; well-regarded online services
  • Banco del Austro
  • Cooperativas — many have their own apps (JEP, Cooprogreso)

Key Features Available Online

  • Account balance and transaction history
  • Domestic transfers between accounts (SPI — Sistema de Pagos Interbancario)
  • Utility bill payments (electricity, water, CLARO, CNT)
  • Mobile phone recharges (recargas)
  • Municipal tax payments (some GADs)
  • Payment of SRI tax obligations
  • IESS contribution payments

The SPI Transfer System

The SPI (Sistema de Pagos Interbancario) allows instant transfers between any bank accounts in Ecuador using the recipient's cédula number or account number. Most transfers are free or cost $0.25–$0.50. This is the standard way Ecuadorians pay each other and businesses.

Security

Ecuadorian banks use OTP (one-time password) authentication sent by SMS to your registered mobile number. Keep your registered phone number up to date. As with any online banking, never share login credentials or OTP codes.

For security when using public WiFi, use a VPN — see WiFi Hotspots safety tips.

Setting Up Online Banking

Online banking enrollment typically requires: 1. Visit a bank branch in person (La Libertad or Salinas) 2. Bring your cédula and any other required documents 3. Register your mobile number for OTP 4. Receive login credentials
