ECUAWIKI › PLACES TO VISIT › COLONCHE
Colonche is a small rural parish (parroquia) in Santa Elena Canton, located inland from the coast in the dry forest and transitional zone. While not a primary tourist destination, it is part of the broader Santa Elena Peninsula landscape and serves as a gateway to the interior highlands and the community of Loma Alta.
Character
Colonche is primarily an agricultural and rural community. The surrounding landscape is characterized by dry scrub forest, cactus, and the typical semi-arid vegetation of the Santa Elena hinterland. During the wet season (January–April), the hills temporarily green up dramatically.
The town itself has a central church, market, and basic services. It is a working Ecuadorian rural community with little in the way of formal tourism infrastructure.
Loma Alta Connection
The road from Colonche or nearby Simón Bolívar parish leads up into the hills toward the village of Loma Alta, the gateway to the Loma Alta Ecological Reserve. The reserve's cloud forest and dry forest trails make for an excellent day trip from the Peninsula. The transition from coastal dry forest through the Colonche foothills to cloud forest is itself a remarkable ecological journey.
Getting There
From Santa Elena city, take the road northeast toward Colonche (approximately 25–30 km, 30–40 minutes). From La Libertad, allow slightly longer. There are occasional local buses. A private vehicle gives the most flexibility for exploring the area.
