Overview

Montañita is the best-known surf destination on Ecuador's Pacific coast and one of the most recognized surf towns in South America. Located on the Ruta del Spondylus (E-15) approximately 90 km north of La Libertad, it sits where Manabí Province begins.

The town's reputation rests on two things: the Montañita Point — a long right-hand point break that works best December through April but produces rideable surf year-round — and its character as a traveller hub, with hostels, bars, surf schools, and an international crowd that descends during peak season.

The Waves

Break Type Level Season
Montañita Point Right-hand point break Intermediate–advanced Dec–Apr peak; year-round
Main beach break Beach break All levels Year-round; more consistent than the point in small swell

Beyond Surfing

  • Night life — bars and clubs on the main strip; active until late during high season
  • Surf lessons and board hire — multiple operators on the beach
  • Yoga retreats and wellness offerings
  • Artisan market (mainly in high season)
  • Day trips to Olón (north), Manglaralto (south), and Ayangue (further south)

Getting There

From La Libertad: buses toward Manta / Jipijapa via the Ruta del Spondylus stop in Montañita (~2.5–3 hours). The bus terminal in La Libertad is the departure point.
