Overview
Kitesurfing on the Santa Elena Peninsula centres on Salinas Bay — the sheltered stretch of water on the northern (bay) side of the peninsula between Salinas and Ballenita. The bay is protected from open-Pacific swell, giving consistently flat or choppy-flat water, while the afternoon thermal wind that builds from around noon makes for reliable launching conditions during the dry season (June–November).
The wind is driven by the temperature differential between the cool Humboldt Current upwelling offshore and the heated inland plain — it builds predictably in the afternoon and dies at sunset, making scheduling easy. Wind speeds typically range from 15 to 25 knots in peak conditions. The low season (dry, windy) is paradoxically the best season for kitesurfing and windsurfing on the peninsula.
Spots
| Spot | Conditions | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Salinas malecón / bay | Flat water, afternoon thermal | Main spot; central, easy access, some boat traffic |
| Chipipe beach | Slightly more exposed | Good for intermediate; fewer obstacles than the main malecón |
| Ballenita bay | Flat, less crowded | Further from services; quieter alternative |
Season & Wind
- Best months: June through November (dry season / garúa season)
- Wind direction: Predominantly south to southwest thermal
- Wind window: Typically noon–18:00; dies at dusk
- December–May (rainy / beach season): Wind becomes lighter and less consistent; not ideal for kitesurfing
Operators & Rentals
Kitesurfing instruction and equipment rental has been available in Salinas seasonally. Ask at the malecón during the dry season for current operators — the scene changes year to year. Bring your own gear if you are an experienced rider.
Getting There
The bay is accessible along the Salinas malecón. Public buses from La Libertad run along the coast road to Salinas and Chipipe. Taxis from La Libertad to the malecón cost approximately $3–5.
