How Taxis Work on the Peninsula

The taxi sector on the Santa Elena Peninsula is a mix of regulated cooperativas (official taxi cooperatives) and informal taxis. Unlike Guayaquil or Quito, the peninsula does not have widespread ride-hailing app coverage from international platforms. Most journeys are negotiated directly with the driver.

Key rules:

  • Always agree on the fare before you get in — meters are rarely used
  • Licensed taxis display a cooperative number on the door and a placard inside
  • Informal taxis (piratas) are common; they're usually cheaper but unregulated
  • It is normal and expected to negotiate — the first price offered to a visible foreigner may be inflated

Typical Fares

These are approximate fares for common routes. Prices may be higher at night, during feriados (public holidays), or in peak tourist season.

Route Approximate Fare (USD) Notes
Within Salinas (short hop) $1.50–$2.50 Chipipe to malecón, etc.
Salinas to La Libertad $3–$5 Depending on exact origin/destination
La Libertad to Santa Elena city $3–$5 Standard canton-to-canton
Salinas to Santa Elena city $6–$10 Longer cross-peninsula trip
La Libertad to Anconcito $4–$6 Fishing village to south
La Libertad to Ballenita $3–$5 Via Salinas road
La Libertad to Punta Blanca $10–$15 Remote beach, may need 4WD
La Libertad to Guayaquil $35–$50 Long-distance, agree upfront; bus is much cheaper
Night surcharge +$1–$2 Informal; varies by driver
Feriado/holiday surcharge +20–30% Common during peak holiday periods

Taxi Apps

International apps like Uber and Cabify have very limited or no coverage on the Santa Elena Peninsula as of 2025. The main digital options are:

InDriver

InDriver (now known as inDrive) operates in several Ecuadorian cities and has partial coverage on the peninsula, particularly in La Libertad and Salinas. The app works on a reverse-auction model — you propose a price and drivers accept or counter-offer.

  • Works on Android and iOS
  • Available in La Libertad and Salinas; coverage is variable
  • Download: search "inDrive" in your app store

Local Cooperative Apps & WhatsApp

Several local cooperativas operate via WhatsApp groups or simple phone dispatch. If you have a regular taxi driver you trust, save their number — this is the most reliable option for the peninsula.

Recommendation

For most visitors: negotiate at the rank (taxi stand) for short trips, or ask your accommodation to call a trusted driver for longer journeys. Having a local contact for a reliable driver is invaluable, especially for late-night travel.

Key Taxi Ranks (Paradas)

Location Notes
Malecón de Salinas Main tourist strip; taxis abundant during peak hours
Chipipe, Salinas Quieter end of Salinas; fewer taxis, especially at night
Terminal Terrestre, La Libertad Busiest rank on the peninsula; 24-hour coverage
Mercado La Libertad Central market area; busy during market hours
Santa Elena city centre Near the parque central
Anconcito Limited supply; best to book in advance or ask locally

Safety Tips

  • Prefer cooperative taxis over unmarked cars when possible — look for the placard, cooperative number on the door, and the driver's ID displayed inside
  • If you feel uncomfortable, exit at a populated area — trust your instincts
  • Avoid sharing taxis with strangers in isolated areas at night
  • Keep small bills — many drivers genuinely don't carry change for large notes
  • After dark, asking your restaurant or bar to call a taxi is safer than hailing one from the street
  • Do not accept rides from people who approach you unsolicited (common around tourist areas)

Long-Distance Taxis

For travel to Guayaquil, inter-provincial trips, or airport runs to GYE (José Joaquín de Olmedo), negotiate a fixed price in advance. Shared colectivo taxis for Guayaquil sometimes depart from La Libertad — ask at the terminal. The bus is significantly cheaper for budget travellers.
