Water Sports

The convergence of the cold Humboldt and warm Equatorial currents at La Chocolatera creates unusually varied ocean conditions — sheltered bay surf for beginners, exposed headland breaks for experienced surfers, clear reef water for diving, and nutrient-rich upwelling that draws dolphins, sea lions, and humpback whales close to shore.

Surfing

→ Surfing (La Peninsula)

Ten distinct breaks across a compact coastline. La Fae (La Lobería) is the peninsula's flagship wave — consistent, powerful, uncrowded. Bay-side breaks at Chipipe and Ballenita suit beginners. Best season: December–April.

Whale Watching

→ Whale Watching (La Peninsula) · Whale Watching Season

Humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) pass offshore every year between June and September. Viewable for free from clifftops at Ballenita, Anconcito, and Farallón Dillon, or by boat from the Salinas malecón.

Snorkeling

→ Snorkeling (La Peninsula)

Rocky reef systems at La Chocolatera, La Lobería, and Punta Blanca. Best visibility in the dry season (May–November). Marine life includes sea lions, rays, and diverse reef fish.

Scuba Diving

→ Scuba Diving (La Peninsula)

Several sites within reach of the peninsula, including submerged rock formations and a wreck dive. PADI-certified operators available in Salinas.

Kayaking

→ Kayaking (La Peninsula)

Calm bay conditions on the Santa Elena Bay side are ideal for kayaking. The Estero de Salinas and sheltered coves near Ballenita are popular routes.

Stand-Up Paddleboarding

→ Stand-Up Paddleboarding (La Peninsula)

The sheltered bay between Salinas and Ballenita is the main SUP area. Early mornings are flattest.

Swimming

→ Swimming (La Peninsula)

Best beaches for safe swimming: Chipipe (Salinas), Malecón de Salinas bay side, and Ballenita. Open Pacific beaches at Punta Blanca and Mar Bravo carry stronger rips.

Fishing

→ Fishing (La Peninsula) · → Deep Sea Fishing (La Peninsula)

Artisanal fishing at Anconcito and Santa Rosa ports. Sportfishing charters operate from Salinas for mahi-mahi, wahoo, and marlin.

Wildlife & Nature

Birdwatching

→ Birdwatching (La Peninsula)

Four distinct habitats within an hour of each other: the Ecuasal industrial salt flats (~100,000 aquatic birds annually including flamingo colonies), the Ancón dry forest (endemic species), the Humedal Velasco Ibarra wetland, and the Chanduy salt flats. Best overall season: June–November.

Land-Based Activities

The peninsula's flat geography and mild year-round climate make it well-suited for cycling, running, and walking. The Salinas malecón and the Chipipe seafront promenade are the main exercise routes for residents.
