Driver's licenses in Ecuador are issued by the ANT (Agencia Nacional de Tránsito). Foreign licenses are valid for short-term visitors; residents living in Ecuador long-term should obtain a local Ecuadorian license.
Foreign Driver's Licenses
Foreign driver's licenses (from most countries) are legally valid in Ecuador for driving as a tourist. Ecuadorian law allows foreign license holders to drive for the duration of their permitted tourist stay (up to 90 days). However:
- If you become a legal resident, you should apply for an Ecuadorian license
- In practice, foreign licenses are accepted by police for minor stops, but residents are technically required to hold a local license
- International Driving Permits (IDP) from AAA or equivalent organizations are recognized
Getting an Ecuadorian Driver's License
The process for obtaining an Ecuadorian license:
1. Prerequisites: Valid cédula or residency card; minimum age 18 (for category B) 2. Medical exam: Basic vision, hearing, and reflexes test at an authorized medical center 3. Driving school: New applicants must complete a certified driving course at an authorized school (autoescuela). Required hours vary by category. 4. ANT exam: Written theory test (available in Spanish only) and practical driving test at the nearest ANT office 5. License issuance: If approved, license is issued at the ANT office
License Categories
| Category | Type of Vehicle |
|---|---|
| B | Private cars and light trucks (most common) |
| A | Motorcycles (various subcategories by engine size) |
| C / D | Commercial vehicles / trucks |
| E / F | Buses and heavy vehicles |
License Renewal
Ecuadorian licenses are issued for 3–5 years. Renewal requires updated medical exam and fee payment at the ANT. Professional categories require additional testing.
