Ecuador has two levels of vehicle insurance: mandatory basic insurance (SOAT) and optional comprehensive coverage (todo riesgo). If you own or drive a vehicle in Ecuador, understanding both is important.

SOAT — Mandatory Insurance

The Seguro Obligatorio de Accidentes de Tránsito (SOAT) is compulsory for all vehicles in Ecuador. It covers personal injury costs (medical, disability, death) for victims of traffic accidents, regardless of fault. It does NOT cover vehicle damage.

  • Purchased from any bank branch or authorized insurance outlet
  • Required for annual vehicle inspection (revisión vehicular) and matrícula renewal
  • Cost: approximately $40–$80/year for private cars; motorcycles are less; buses more
  • Without valid SOAT, driving is illegal and police can impound the vehicle

Comprehensive Insurance (Todo Riesgo)

Optional comprehensive insurance covers:

  • Collision damage to your own vehicle
  • Theft of the vehicle
  • Third-party property damage
  • Glass, tires, and accessories (varies by policy)

Annual premiums typically range from 2–4% of the vehicle's insured value. A $15,000 car might cost $300–$600/year to insure comprehensively. Premiums vary by driver history, vehicle age, and coverage level.

Major insurers operating in Ecuador include:

  • Seguros Sucre
  • Seguros Equinoccial
  • Mapfre Ecuador
  • AIG Ecuador
  • Chubb Ecuador

An insurance broker (corredor de seguros) can compare quotes across providers — recommended for new buyers.

Third-Party Liability (Responsabilidad Civil)

Beyond SOAT, additional third-party liability coverage (for damage you cause to other vehicles or property) is available as an add-on or within a todo riesgo policy. Recommended if driving frequently on busy roads.
