Driver's licenses in Ecuador are issued by the ANT (Agencia Nacional de Tránsito). Foreign licenses are valid for short-term visitors; residents living in Ecuador long-term should obtain a local Ecuadorian license.
Foreign Driver's Licenses
Foreign driver's licenses (from most countries) are legally valid in Ecuador for driving as a tourist. Ecuadorian law allows foreign license holders to drive for the duration of their permitted tourist stay (up to 90 days). However:
- If you become a legal resident, you should apply for an Ecuadorian license
- In practice, foreign licenses are accepted by police for minor stops, but residents are technically required to hold a local license
- International Driving Permits (IDP) from AAA or equivalent organizations are recognized
