The Terminal Terrestre Regional Sumpa (commonly known as Terminal Sumpa or simply the terminal) is the main inter-provincial bus terminal for the Santa Elena Peninsula, located in Santa Elena city. It is the primary departure and arrival point for buses connecting the peninsula to Guayaquil, Quito, Manta, and other Ecuadorian cities.

Long-distance buses to the rest of Ecuador leave from here, along with many of the inter-cantonal buses serving the communes of Santa Elena canton and the Ruta del Spondylus.

The terminal also serves as a transfer point for local services between Santa Elena city and the other towns and villages of the peninsula. Linea buses (see Linea 7, Linea 13) stop here on their routes between Salinas/La Libertad and points east and north.

Ruta del Spondylus Buses
Each cooperativa has its own ticket window (boletería) along the main hall. Every window has a numbered sign.

Buses heading north toward Montañita, Manglaralto, Ayangue, and the Ruta del Spondylus depart from or pass through Santa Elena. For guidance on this route see Buses Along the Ruta del Spondylus.
The window numbers are not in order. Walking down the hall, they run 02, 3, 4, 2, 6, 7, 9, 12, 15, 13, 8, 13, 14, 15, 01, 05, 16, 19, 20, 21, 22. Several numbers appear on two different windows: there are two windows marked 2 (02 and 2), two marked 13 and two marked 15. Look for the cooperativa's name, not only the number.

How to Get to the Terminal
The window number is not the platform (andén) number. For example, Liberpesa sells tickets at window 19 but its buses leave from andén 20, while CICA sells at window 20 and boards at andén 19. Check the andén printed on your ticket or posted at the window.

From La Libertad: Linea 7 and Linea 13 buses pass through Santa Elena — ask the driver to stop at the terminal (parada en el terminal). Taxi from La Libertad: approximately $4–6.
The table below lists the windows in the order they appear along the hall.

From Salinas: Taxi approximately $8–12; or bus to La Libertad first, then continue.

The terminal has:
Arriving passengers come out through a separate door marked Solo llegada de pasajeros. People waiting to meet someone should wait in the seating area and not go through that door.
* Waiting area with seating
* Ticket windows for major operators
* Small food vendors and kiosks
* Taxis available outside
* Limited parking

Major bus operators departing from Terminal Sumpa include CLP (Cooperativa de Transportes), Libertad Peninsular, and several inter-provincial lines. Ticket windows line the terminal hall. It is always possible to buy tickets on arrival; booking ahead is recommended for overnight journeys and during feriados (national holidays).
For buses north along the coast to Ayangue, Manglaralto, Montañita, Olón and beyond, see Buses Along the Ruta del Spondylus.

Tips
* Arrive early for long-distance journeys, especially on Fridays and holiday weekends when buses fill quickly
* Bring cash — ticket windows prefer cash; some now accept card
* Check departure time on your ticket — some buses leave ahead of schedule if full
* The terminal is generally safe during operating hours but take normal precautions with luggage

The Terminal Terrestre Regional Sumpa — usually just Terminal Sumpa — is the main bus terminal of Santa Elena Province. Long-distance buses to the rest of Ecuador leave from here, along with many of the inter-cantonal buses serving the communes of Santa Elena canton and the Ruta del Spondylus.

The terminal takes its name from the Amantes de Sumpa, the 8,000-year-old burial found in Santa Elena.

Location

The terminal is on the Vía a Ballenita, on the edge of Santa Elena city. It is in Santa Elena canton, not in La Libertad.

History

 • 16 January 2014 — The terminal opens as the Terminal Terrestre Regional de Santa Elena, adding the name Sumpa. The investment was about $6.97 million.
 • 15 September 2015 — The Agencia Nacional de Tránsito (ANT) hands over administration of the terminal to the Municipality of Santa Elena.

Traffic

On a normal day the terminal handles about 512 departures and 8,436 passengers:

Service Departures per day Passengers per day
Within the province (intraprovincial cooperatives) 310 2,755
To other provinces (interprovincial cooperatives) 202 5,681
Total 512 8,436

Did you know…?
📊 …La Libertad fits about 112,000 people into roughly 25 km² — one of the densest cantons in Ecuador?

Ticket Windows

Each cooperativa has its own ticket window (boletería) along the main hall. Every window has a numbered sign.

The window number is not the platform (andén) number. For example, Liberpesa sells tickets at window 19 but its buses leave from andén 20, while CICA sells at window 20 and boards at andén 19. Check the andén printed on your ticket or posted at the window.

The table below lists the windows in the order they appear along the hall.
