Getting from the Santa Elena Peninsula to Quito involves either an overnight bus (the most practical and economical option) or flying via Guayaquil. There is no direct flight from the peninsula to the capital.

By Bus (Recommended)

The most practical way. Overnight buses depart from Terminal Sumpa in Santa Elena (or you can board in La Libertad) and arrive at Quito's Quitumbe terminal in the south of the city, or at the north terminal (Terminal Carcelén).

Practical details

Detail Information
Journey time 8–10 hours
Departure times Mainly evening (20:00–23:00) for overnight; some daytime services
Approximate fare $12–18 USD one-way (varies by operator and seat class)
Arrival terminal Quitumbe (south) or Terminal Carcelén (north) depending on operator
Operators CLP, Libertad Peninsular, Panamericana, and others — check at Terminal Sumpa
Seat classes Cama (fully reclining) and semi-cama (partial recline); cama is worth the extra few dollars for overnight

Tips

  • Book your seat in advance for feriados (holidays) and long weekends — buses sell out
  • Bring a blanket or warm layer — buses are air-conditioned to cold temperatures overnight
  • Secure your bag in the overhead rack or under the seat; use the luggage hold for large bags
  • Overnight departure means you arrive in Quito in the morning and don't waste daylight hours

By Plane (Via Guayaquil)

There is no commercial airport in service on the peninsula. The nearest airport for scheduled flights is Aeropuerto José Joaquín de Olmedo (GYE) in Guayaquil.

  1. Get to Guayaquil from the peninsula (2–2.5 hours by bus — see Getting to Guayaquil)
  2. Fly Guayaquil → Quito: approximately 1 hour; multiple daily flights with LATAM, Avianca, JetSmart
  3. From Quito airport (NAIQ — Mariscal Sucre International), the airport is 45 minutes east of the city centre

Round-trip flight prices vary significantly — cheap tickets (LCC fares) start at $40–80 USD but surge for holidays. For same-day travel to Quito, flying saves 7–8 hours on the road.

By Private Car

The drive is approximately 490 km via Guayaquil and the Panamericana Norte (E35). With normal traffic, 6–8 hours including the Guayaquil transit.

Route: La Libertad → Guayaquil (E-40) → Via Duran/Naranjal (E-25) or direct through Guayaquil (E-40) to Durán bridge → north on E-35 (Panamericana) through Riobamba and Ambato to Quito.

Road quality is good on the main highways. The mountain section (Riobamba to Quito) involves altitude changes to 3,500m+ and can be affected by fog and rain — drive attentively.

Arriving in Quito

Quito sits at 2,850 metres altitude. If you come from sea level, altitude sickness (soroche) is possible — headache, fatigue, shortness of breath. Rest on arrival, drink water, avoid alcohol your first day. Symptoms usually resolve within 24–48 hours.
