Overview
October 7 is the Día de Provincialización de Santa Elena — the anniversary of the creation of Santa Elena Province on 7 October 2007, when it was separated from Guayas Province by decree. It is the most important civic holiday in the province, celebrated across all three cantons.
Before 2007, the Santa Elena Peninsula was part of Guayas Province, administered from Guayaquil. The separation created Ecuador's newest province and gave the peninsula its own prefectura, gobernación, and independent provincial budget.
Celebrations
- Parades (desfiles cívicos) in Santa Elena city, La Libertad, and Salinas — school bands, civic groups, military units, and local authorities
- Cultural events — music, dance, and exhibitions organised by the Prefectura and municipal governments
- Speeches and official acts at government buildings
- School events in the days leading up to October 7 — students often present performances and projects on provincial history and culture

- Government offices, schools, and many businesses close on October 7
- Banks and supermarkets generally remain open
- Public transport operates normally
- The holiday is significant within the province but is not a national feriado — it doesn't generate the same tourist traffic as Carnaval or Fin de Año
