Overview

Carnaval in Ecuador is a national public holiday (feriado) that falls on the Monday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday — usually in February or March. It is one of the country's most celebrated holidays, and Salinas is one of its most popular destinations.

The Salinas Carnaval is famously associated with agua (water) — people throw water balloons, use water guns, and spray water at anyone passing by. This is considered part of the celebration and is expected. If you go out during Carnaval, assume you will get wet.

Salinas brands its Carnaval as "Sal con Cultura" — a cultural program alongside the beach festivities, including live music on the malecón, food stalls, and organized events.

What to Expect

  • Salinas at maximum capacity — the city fills with visitors from Guayaquil and across Ecuador; hotels book out months in advance
  • Water throwing — everywhere, all day, during the holiday days. Protect electronics.
  • Fireworks (fuegos artificiales) — at night
  • Live music on the malecón
  • Price increases — hotel and restaurant prices spike significantly
  • Traffic: The road from Guayaquil to Salinas becomes severely congested; allow extra time

Practical Tips

  • Book accommodation months in advance if you want to stay in Salinas during Carnaval
  • Protect your phone, camera, and valuables in waterproof bags
  • Carry cash — ATMs run out during high-traffic feriados
  • If you don't like getting wet, avoid the main malecón during peak hours
  • The Monday and Tuesday are the peak days; Sunday is the start
