Paragliding
La Rinconada's clifftop thermals make it the most promising paragliding launch site on the route — a headland with consistent onshore winds and a landing zone on the beach below.

Overview

La Rinconada's high coastal cliffs generate consistent thermal and dynamic lift from the onshore Pacific winds, making the headland a known paragliding launch site among experienced coastal pilots. The cliff faces west, the winds are reliable, and the beach below provides a reasonable landing zone.

There are no commercial paragliding operators based on the route. Paragliding here is a self-organised activity for visiting pilots who bring their own equipment. The route is not a developed paragliding destination — there are no schools, no tandem operators, and no support infrastructure at the launch site.

The Site

The La Rinconada headland rises to approximately 60–80 metres above sea level at the cliffs. The onshore Pacific wind creates a consistent soaring environment when conditions are active. The launch area requires local knowledge — visit in the morning when conditions are typically more consistent, observe first from the clifftop, and assess conditions before committing.

Landing: the beach directly below the cliffs is accessible at low tide; the road shoulder to the south of the headland is an alternative.

Important Notes

  • Paragliding from the cliffs requires judgment and experience; the site is unmanaged
  • Do not launch in unfamiliar conditions or without proper assessment; the cliffs are serious terrain
  • There is no rescue infrastructure in La Rinconada; bring communications and inform someone of your plans
  • Check local weather before going — the conditions can shift quickly on this section of coast

Getting There

La Rinconada is on the E-15, approximately 45–60 minutes north of Montañita by bus.
