A range of legal services is available on the Santa Elena Peninsula. Most practicing lawyers (abogados) are based in La Libertad and Santa Elena city, with some in Salinas.

Immigration Law — The most commonly sought legal service by expats. Immigration lawyers assist with residency visa applications, renewals, and complications. See Hiring an Immigration Lawyer for details.

Property and Real Estate Law — Lawyers specializing in property conveyancing, title review, deed preparation, and dispute resolution. Essential for property purchases (see Buying Process Ecuador).

Business and Corporate Law — Company formation, contracts, employment law (see Employment Law Ecuador), and commercial matters.

Criminal Defense — If you face criminal charges, you need a qualified criminal defense attorney. The Defensoría Pública provides free criminal defense for those who cannot afford representation.

Civil Law — Contracts, debt collection, family law (divorce, custody), inheritance, and disputes.

Notarial Services — While not strictly law, notaries (notarios públicos) handle document legalization, powers of attorney, property deeds, and other formal instruments. See Notarías.

Finding a Lawyer

  • Expat community recommendations — The most reliable source. See Expat Communities on the Peninsula and Peninsula Facebook groups.
  • Bar Association referrals — The Foro de Abogados del Ecuador has regional chapters.
  • Referrals from other professionals — Accountants, notaries, and real estate agents often know good lawyers.
  • Embassy lists — Your home country's embassy in Guayaquil typically maintains a list of local lawyers who work with foreign nationals.

Costs

Legal fees in Ecuador are significantly lower than in North America or Europe:

  • Consultation: $30–$80/hour
  • Immigration visa applications: $300–$800 flat fee (complex cases more)
  • Property transaction legal services: 0.5–1% of transaction value
