ECUAWIKI › LIVING ON THE PENINSULA › HARDWARE & BUILDING SUPPLIES
Hardware and building materials are widely available on the Santa Elena Peninsula, concentrated in La Libertad and Santa Elena city. Whether you're doing minor home repairs, undertaking a renovation, or building a new property, you'll find most materials locally.
Hardware Stores (Ferreterías)
Ferreterías (hardware stores) are found throughout the Peninsula. La Libertad has the highest concentration, with both large chain stores and small independent shops.
Major national chains with Peninsula presence:
- Kywi — one of Ecuador's largest hardware chains; comprehensive selection of tools, plumbing, electrical, paint
- Ferrisariato — another major national chain with wide product range
Local ferreterías are found in every major town and most villages. They typically stock:
- Basic hand tools
- Plumbing fittings (tubería PVC)
- Electrical supplies
- Cement, sand, and aggregates (from nearby depots)
- Paint and sealants
- Fasteners (tornillos, clavos)
- Safety equipment
Building Materials
For larger construction projects:
- Cement and blocks: Available from ferreterías and dedicated materials yards (distribuidoras de materiales)
- Sand and gravel: Local suppliers; delivered by truck
- Steel rebar: Sold by the ton or unit; available in La Libertad
- Lumber: Available, though Ecuador uses more concrete/block construction than timber
- Roofing materials: Zinc sheets (zinc galvanizado), tiles, and various roofing systems
Renting Equipment
Heavy equipment rental (mixers, compressors, scaffolding) is available in La Libertad from equipment rental companies. Ask at larger ferreterías for recommendations.
Prices
Hardware prices in Ecuador are generally lower than in North America or Europe. Labor for construction and repairs is also significantly cheaper. Local contractors (albañiles) are affordable and widely available.
