Power cuts (cortes de luz) are a fact of life in Ecuador, though frequency and duration vary by season and year. The Santa Elena Peninsula is served by CNEL EP (Corporación Nacional de Electricidad, Unidad de Negocio Santa Elena).

Scheduled Power Cuts (Racionamiento)

When Ecuador experiences energy shortage (typically during low-water-level periods in the hydroelectric system, often in the dry season), the government implements scheduled rolling blackouts (racionamiento eléctrico). These are:

  • Published in advance on the CNEL website and official social media
  • Typically announced 24–48 hours ahead
  • Organized by sector/zone (your zone will be listed)
  • Duration usually 4–8 hours per day
  • Scheduled at different times for different zones to distribute impact

To find your zone's schedule: Check the CNEL Santa Elena social media pages or website (endesaonline.com or cnel.gob.ec).

Unscheduled Outages

Equipment faults, storms, and localized issues cause unscheduled outages. These are typically resolved within a few hours. Report extended outages to CNEL at 1800-CNEL-EP.

Preparing for Power Cuts

  • Charge phones, laptops, and power banks before the scheduled cut
  • Keep a flashlight or candles available
  • Fill water containers (electric water pumps stop during cuts)
  • Businesses with refrigeration use generators; plan shopping around cuts
  • Internet routers go down during cuts; have mobile data as backup

Backup Power

Many Peninsula businesses and some homes have generators (generadores) or UPS systems. Generators run on diesel fuel, available at nearby gasolineras.
