ECUAWIKI â€ș HOW-TO GUIDES â€ș BUYING A CAR IN ECUADOR

Buying a car in Ecuador is relatively straightforward. Ecuador uses US dollars, so no exchange rate risk applies. Vehicles are available from dealerships (concesionarios) or private sellers (vendedores particulares). Foreigners with a valid cédula can buy and register vehicles.

New vs. Used Cars

New cars are sold by authorized dealerships. Prices are generally comparable to or slightly higher than USA MSRP due to import taxes. Popular brands include Chevrolet (market leader), Toyota, Hyundai, Kia, and Suzuki. Many models are also assembled in Ecuador (Chevrolet has a plant in Guayaquil).

Used cars (carros usados / seminuevos) are widely available through private sellers, car lots, and online platforms (OLX Ecuador, Patiotuerca) — the two main used car marketplaces online in Ecuador.

Purchase Process

1. Agree on price with seller 2. Verify vehicle documents:

  * Matrícula (registration certificate) — must be current
  * SOAT (mandatory liability insurance) — must be valid
  * Vehicle title (no outstanding debt or liens)

3. Agree on payment and handover 4. Jointly visit the nearest ANT (Agencia Nacional de TrĂĄnsito) office to transfer ownership 5. ANT issues updated matrĂcula in your name

Required documents for transfer:

  • Both parties' cĂ©dulas
  • Original matrĂcula
  • Valid SOAT
  • Notarized bill of sale (compraventa) — some ANT offices require this; a notary can prepare it in minutes

Vehicle Taxes and Fees

  • MatrĂcula annual fee — varies by vehicle age and value; typically $50–$300/year
  • SOAT (insurance) — mandatory; approximately $40–$80/year depending on vehicle type
  • Vehicle inspection (revisiĂłn) — annual; required for renewal of matrĂcula; approximately $20–$30
  • ANT transfer fee — relatively small; approximately $20–$50

Car Insurance

Beyond mandatory SOAT (which only covers third-party liability), comprehensive auto insurance (seguro todo riesgo) is available from Ecuadorian insurers. See Car Insurance Ecuador for details.

Getting a Driver's License

Foreign driver's licenses are valid in Ecuador for tourism use, but residents should obtain a local Ecuadorian license for long-term driving. See Drivers Licenses for the process.

Importing a Vehicle

Bringing a foreign-registered vehicle to Ecuador permanently incurs very high import duties (35% + ICE luxury tax + other fees), making most imported vehicles uneconomically expensive. Buying locally is almost always better value.
