Overview

Ayampe is the meditation and retreat centre of the Ruta del Spondylus. The village sits at the boundary of cloud forest and Pacific coast, and the combination of forest sound, surf noise, and relative isolation has made it Ecuador's most established meditation retreat destination outside of Quito's upscale wellness industry.

Several retreat centres operate year-round in and around Ayampe. The programmes range from short weekend immersions to month-long silent or guided retreats. Styles offered include vipassana, mindfulness, tantra, and breathwork, as well as less formal meditation incorporated into yoga retreats.

What's Available

  • Weekend retreats — 2–3 days; usually include 3–5 guided sessions, accommodation, and vegetarian meals; accessible for those new to meditation
  • Week-long courses — deeper immersion; typically includes daily practice schedule, personal guidance, and optional bodywork or sound healing
  • Month-long programmes — the deepest commitment; suitable for those with established practice wanting a significant break; all-inclusive accommodation in forest setting
  • Silent retreats — some centres offer periods of noble silence (no talking for 3–10 days); book well in advance as spaces are limited
  • Day sessions — several centres welcome visitors for single sessions or day retreats; less structured but useful for testing the environment

The Setting

Retreats in Ayampe take place in simple, functional facilities that are part of the village's identity as an alternative community. Accommodation is typically in shared or private wooden cabañas in the forest or at the forest edge. Electricity may be solar or intermittent. The aesthetic is intentionally simple — the appeal is the environment and the practice, not luxury.

The sound environment is extraordinary for meditation: surf from the Pacific audible from almost everywhere, forest sounds at dawn (including howler monkeys), and the absence of traffic noise that characterises most coastal towns.

Booking

Ayampe retreat centres do not typically list on mainstream booking platforms. Most are found through word of mouth, social media, or dedicated wellness platforms. Search specifically for the town name. Book at least 2–4 weeks in advance for high season; popular retreat dates (full moon, equinox, seasonal transitions) fill months ahead.

Getting There

Ayampe is approximately 1 hour north of Montañita by bus on the E-15. Most retreat centres will arrange pickup from the bus stop with advance notice.
