Overview
Yoga has a longer history on the Ruta del Spondylus than the surf culture that now defines most of the route's international reputation. Ayampe — a small village where the cloud forest meets the Pacific about an hour north of Montañita — attracted the first wave of wellness travellers in the 1990s and today has a concentration of retreat centres and yoga teachers that is unusual for a village of its size.
Montañita has multiple yoga studios offering drop-in classes and short courses, primarily serving the international surf and backpacker crowd. Olón is quieter and has a growing wellness scene — beach yoga at sunrise is offered by several accommodation providers. But for those specifically seeking immersive yoga or retreat experiences, Ayampe is the destination.
Yoga by Town
Ayampe
Ayampe is the yoga and retreat hub of the route. Several dedicated retreat centres operate year-round, offering everything from weekend intensive courses to month-long programmes. Styles include hatha, vinyasa, yin, and tantra, as well as meditation and breathwork. Most centres offer accommodation packages.
- Book retreat programmes in advance — capacity is limited and high season fills up
- Drop-in classes are available at most studios for visitors not on a retreat
- Several centres are set in the forest or at the forest edge, with open-air shalas facing the ocean or the trees
Montañita
Montañita's yoga offering is more urban than Ayampe's — multiple studios in the town centre or on the beach, with drop-in classes fitting around surf schedules. Expect morning yin and vinyasa, afternoon restorative, and occasional full-moon or special event sessions. Prices are competitive (typically $8–15 per class).
Olón
Olón is quieter and several guesthouses offer beach yoga as part of their accommodation packages or as standalone sessions. The long, flat beach is ideal for sunrise practice. Ask at accommodation in Olón for current schedules.
What to Expect on a Retreat
Multi-day retreats at Ayampe typically include:
- Daily yoga classes (1–3 per day depending on the programme)
- Accommodation in simple but comfortable cabañas or eco-lodges
- Plant-based or vegetarian meals — Ayampe has developed a local food culture that matches the wellness focus
- Optional activities: guided forest walks, surf lessons, meditation, sound healing
The forest setting and consistent surf noise in the background make Ayampe retreats distinctive. This is not a luxury spa town; it is a working farm and forest community with an international wellness overlay. Electricity can be intermittent; the appeal is simplicity, nature, and practice.
Getting There
Ayampe is approximately 1 hour north of Montañita by bus on the E-15. Ask the driver to stop at Ayampe — the village is small and buses do not always call it out.
Most retreat centres will meet guests from the bus stop if travel is arranged in advance.
