Beaches of the Santa Elena Province

The Santa Elena Province boasts some of Ecuador's most diverse coastline, ranging from the high-energy urban beaches of Salinas to the rugged, secluded shores of the northern Ruta del Spondylus.

⛱️ The Peninsula (Urban & Family)

These beaches are closest to major services, hospitals, and shopping.

• Playa del Malecon (Salinas): The "main" beach. High-rise backdrop, calm waters, and full amenities. Ideal for families and jet-skiing.
• Playa de San Lorenzo (Salinas): The "main" beach. High-rise backdrop, calm waters, and full amenities. Ideal for families and jet-skiing.
• Playa de Chipipe(Salinas): Located on the other side of the Salinas yacht club. Much wider and quieter than San Lorenzo; the water is very shallow and calm.
• Playa de La FAE - La Loberia (Salinas): A series of residential "entradas." Very quiet during the week, popular with surfers at certain breaks, and high-end vacation rentals.
• Playa de Mar Bravo (Salinas): The "main" beach. High-rise backdrop, calm waters, and full amenities. Ideal for families and jet-skiing.
• Playa de Punta Carnero (Salinas): The "main" beach. High-rise backdrop, calm waters, and full amenities. Ideal for families and jet-skiing.
• Playa del Malecon (La Libertad): Great for a sunset stroll. While less of a "swimming" beach than Salinas, it is the heart of local culture and fresh seafood.
• Playa del Malecon(Ballenita): A charming fishing village with a newly renovated Malecón. Known for its whale-watching viewpoints (June–September) and excellent seafood.
• Playa de La FAE - La Loberia: A series of residential "entradas." Very quiet during the week, popular with surfers at certain breaks, and high-end vacation rentals.

🏄 The Ruta del Spondylus (Surf & Nature)

Heading north from Santa Elena, the landscape becomes more tropical and the waves more consistent.

• Ayangue: Known as the "Blue Pool" (La Piscina del Pacífico). A horseshoe-shaped bay that keeps the water perfectly calm. Famous for snorkeling and Spondylus diving.
• Montañita: The surf and party capital of Ecuador. World-class right-hand point break and a vibrant, bohemian town center.
• Olón: Just 5 minutes north of Montañita, but worlds apart in vibe. A massive, wide beach perfect for long walks and beginner-to-intermediate surfing. Very popular with the expat community.
• Punta Centinela: Home to large all-inclusive resorts, offering private-feeling stretches of sand.
• Ayampe: (On the border with Manabí) A lush, jungle-meets-ocean setting. The premier spot for yoga retreats and birdwatching.

⚠️ Safety & Etiquette

• Flags: Always check the flag colors (Green = Safe, Yellow = Caution, Red = Danger).
• Rip Tides: Many northern beaches have strong undercurrents. If caught in a rip, swim parallel to the shore.
• Sun Protection: The equatorial sun is strongest between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM. High SPF is mandatory.
