Religion on the Peninsula

Ecuador is a predominantly Catholic country — approximately 70–80% of the population identifies as Roman Catholic, though levels of active practice vary. On the Santa Elena Peninsula, Catholic churches are present in every town and village, and Catholic feast days (santos patronos) are major community celebrations.

Catholic Churches

Each town on the peninsula has at least one Catholic church. Major churches include:

  • Salinas city — several churches including the main parish church near the Parque de Chipipe
  • La Libertad — multiple Catholic parishes serving different barrios
  • Santa Elena city — main parish church near the Parque Central
  • Anconcito — parish church serving the fishing community
  • Ballenita — Iglesia de Ballenita, visible from the malecón

On the Ruta del Spondylus, the Iglesia de Olón is one of the most visually striking churches on the coast — a white clifftop church visible for kilometres along the beach, a landmark of the entire route.

Evangelical / Protestant

Evangelical and Pentecostal congregations are active throughout the peninsula. In La Libertad and Santa Elena, multiple evangelical churches are found in residential neighbourhoods. The growth of evangelical Christianity in Ecuador mirrors the broader Latin American trend of the past three decades.

Other Denominations

  • Jehovah's Witnesses have a Kingdom Hall (Salón del Reino) presence in La Libertad and Salinas
  • Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS/Mormon) — a chapel in La Libertad
  • Seventh-Day Adventist — present in some areas

Spiritual and Wellness

Ayampe (Ruta del Spondylus) has a notable concentration of yoga retreat centres and meditation spaces — several dedicated retreat operations serve both the international traveller market and long-term resident spiritual practitioners. This is arguably the spiritual wellness hub of the entire route.

Montañita also has yoga studios and holistic therapy offerings catering to the international backpacker and wellness traveller community.

Interfaith and Expat Community

The expat community on the peninsula is religiously diverse. English-language services are not widely available — most Catholic masses are in Spanish. Some evangelical congregations in the international communities have English-language services; check with local expat Facebook groups for current information.
