ECUAWIKI › RUTA DEL SPONDYLUS › OLÓN

Olón Beach is the main beach at Olón, a quiet town on the Ruta del Spondylus just north of Montañita. It is one of the longest and widest beaches on the entire route — a sweeping arc of sand that stretches for several kilometres with nothing on it but ocean, sky, and the occasional fishing boat.

The Beach

Olón's beach is open, flat, and uncrowded compared to the intensely developed Montañita strip just to the south. The sand is grey-brown. The waves are moderate — suitable for swimming, boogie boarding, and beginner to intermediate surfing, but without the power of Montañita's famous point break. The beach is wide at low tide and narrows toward high tide.

Olón attracts a different visitor from Montañita: families, Ecuadorians seeking a quieter alternative, budget travellers who want proximity to Montañita's nightlife without sleeping through the noise, and those who simply prefer emptiness to atmosphere.

The Church

The defining visual of Olón is the Iglesia de Olón — a striking white church perched on the clifftop at the southern end of the beach, visible from a considerable distance along the shoreline in both directions. The church sits above the beach and can be climbed to on foot for panoramic views of the coast.

Activities

  • Swimming — moderate waves, generally safe for families; respect ocean conditions
  • Surfing — beginner and intermediate level; smaller and gentler than Montañita
  • Walking the beach — long, flat, and uncrowded
  • Watching the sunset — the beach faces the open Pacific; sunsets here are outstanding
  • Yoga — several small operators offer beach yoga at sunrise; check locally
  • Kite flying — consistent afternoon wind, flat open beach, few obstacles

Getting There

Olón is on the E-15, approximately 2 km north of Montañita. From La Libertad, take a bus toward Manta/Montañita and ask for Olón (roughly 2.5–3 hours). From Montañita, 5 minutes by motortaxi or 20–25 minutes on foot along the beach at low tide.
