ECUAWIKI › SURFING › MONTAÑITA POINT
Montañita Point is the rocky point break at the northern end of Montañita beach, offering a different wave type to the main beach break. Point breaks generally produce longer, more predictable rides than beach breaks, making the point a sought-after wave when the swell cooperates.
The Wave
The point at the northern end of Montañita produces left-hand waves that peel along the rocky bottom in larger swells. Characteristics:
- Longer rides than the main beach break in ideal conditions
- More critical and powerful due to the rock/reef bottom
- Best in solid SW ground swell (December–April)
- Can be inconsistent — the right swell direction and size needed to activate the point
Who Surfs the Point
The point is generally ridden by more experienced surfers familiar with reef bottom hazards. In smaller conditions, it may see few surfers; in good swell, it becomes a competitive lineup.
Access
Walk along the beach from Montañita village to the northern rocky point, or come from the direction of Olón/Olon road. The rocks at the point can be slippery — wear reef boots if available.
Safety
- Rocky bottom — be careful in wipeouts
- Know how to fall safely around reefs
- Check conditions before paddling out — consult local surfers
- Don't surf the point without experience at reef breaks
