Losing important documents while in Ecuador can be stressful, but there are clear processes for reporting and replacing them. Here's what to do based on what was lost.

Step 1: File a Police Report (Denuncia)

For any lost or stolen documents, your first step is to file a police report (denuncia) at the nearest Policía Nacional station. This creates an official record and is required for most replacement processes. You will receive a copy of the denuncia.

In La Libertad and Salinas, police stations are easily found. Call 911 to locate the nearest station.

Lost Passport (Foreign Nationals)

1. File a denuncia at the police station 2. Contact your country's embassy in Guayaquil immediately 3. Apply for an Emergency Travel Document or new passport at the embassy 4. Inform Ecuador's Migración (immigration) about the situation

Key embassies near the Peninsula:

  • US Embassy: Guayaquil consulate
  • UK consulate: Guayaquil
  • German and other EU consulates: Guayaquil or Quito

Lost Cédula (Ecuadorian Residents)

1. File a denuncia at the police station 2. Report to the Registro Civil office 3. Apply for a replacement cédula (bring the denuncia, photos, any other ID)

Lost Residency Card

1. File a denuncia 2. Contact the Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores for replacement procedure 3. You may need an appointment in Guayaquil or Quito for residency document replacement

Lost Driving License

Report to ANT (Agencia Nacional de Tránsito) office in La Libertad or Santa Elena with the denuncia for a replacement.

Prevention Tips

  • Keep digital scans of all important documents in a secure cloud service (Google Drive, Dropbox)
  • Leave your passport in a hotel safe when not needed; carry a photocopy
  • Consider a money belt for valuables when traveling in busy areas
  • Separate your credit cards so not all are lost together
