The Santa Elena Peninsula sits at an ecological crossroads — the lower coastal dry forest transitions into humid cloud forest in the hills above the coastline. Cloud forest trekking takes you from the hot coastal zone into a dramatically different world of mossy trees, orchids, bromeliads, and an exceptional diversity of birds.
Best Cloud Forest Areas
Loma Alta Ecological Reserve is the premier cloud forest trekking destination on the Peninsula. This community-run reserve spans the dry forest to cloud forest transition zone above the village of Loma Alta (approximately 30 km north of La Libertad). The reserve has guided trails ranging from 2–6 hours in length, passing through different vegetation zones. Tumbesian endemic birds are the main draw for naturalists.
Ayampe Cloud Forest — The hills above Ayampe village on the northern end of the Peninsula offer informal cloud forest access. The area is wetter and more lush than the southern Peninsula. Several small eco-lodges in the area can arrange guided hikes.
What to Expect
Cloud forest hiking involves:
- Steep to moderate trails (altitude gains of 200–600m above sea level in this region)
- Slippery paths when wet — good trail shoes essential
- High humidity and frequent mist
- Spectacular orchids, bromeliads, and ferns
- Exceptional birdwatching (tanagers, hummingbirds, antbirds, flycatchers)
- Some areas: howler monkeys
Practical Tips
- Book guided visits to Loma Alta in advance by contacting the community directly or through tour operators in Montañita or Ayangue
- Wear long sleeves and pants to protect against insects and vegetation
- Bring plenty of water and snacks
- Start early (before 8 AM) for the best bird activity and before afternoon mist thickens
- Rubber boots (botas de caucho) are available for hire at Loma Alta — highly recommended in wet season
Combination Trips
Cloud forest trekking combines well with a visit to Manglaralto Estuary (nearby) or Montañita for beach time before or after the trek.
