The Parque Histórico Ancón (Historic Park of Ancón) is a heritage site in the village of Ancón, on the southeastern flank of the Salinas canton. It commemorates and preserves the site of Ecuador's first commercial oil well, drilled in 1911 — a moment that began the country's petroleum industry.

Historical Background

Natural hydrocarbon surface outcrops (afloramientos) — places where crude oil seeps to the surface naturally — were well known in the Ancón area long before systematic drilling. Local populations had observed the oil seeps for generations. The first commercial exploitation began with the Anglo-Ecuadorian Oilfields company in 1911, which established drilling operations here and began extraction that would continue for decades.

The Ancón oil field predates the Amazon basin petroleum development (which began in the 1960s–70s) by half a century, making the peninsula the birthplace of Ecuador's oil industry. At its peak, the Ancón field employed hundreds of workers and was connected to infrastructure including a light railway.

What to See

The parque preserves elements of the early oil field infrastructure:

  • Original drilling equipment and pump jacks from the early 20th century
  • Interpretation of the field's history and the Anglo-Ecuadorian Oilfields company
  • Natural oil seep outcrops (afloramientos) — visible evidence of the natural hydrocarbon that motivated the initial extraction

The visible infrastructure gives a sense of the industrial scale of early 20th-century oil extraction on the peninsula.

Ancón Today

The village of Ancón today is a small, quiet community with a mix of long-standing oil-industry heritage and fishing. Active oil extraction continues nearby (operated by PacifPetrol), and natural oil seeps remain visible in several locations in the Salinas canton.

Getting There

Ancón is accessible by road from La Libertad, approximately 25 km south. Taxi from La Libertad: approximately $10–15. Ask locally for the parque histórico — it is not always prominently signposted.
