Las Tunas is a small, quiet beach community located between Manglaralto and Montañita on the Ruta del Spondylus. It offers a relaxed alternative to the party atmosphere of Montañita, with a beautiful beach, some surf, and a laid-back local community.

The Beach

Las Tunas beach is a broad, sandy stretch of Pacific coast with excellent swimming conditions and a low-key atmosphere. The beach faces the open Pacific and receives swells suitable for surfing (smaller and gentler than Montañita's main break).

During whale watching season (June–September), the offshore waters here are among the best for spotting Humpback Whales, which come close to shore. See Temporada de Ballenas.

The Hanging Bridges

Las Tunas is home to a unique local attraction — the Las Tunas Hanging Bridges (puentes colgantes) — suspension bridges over a small river or estuary in the area. These bridges are a local curiosity and a pleasant short walk from the beach.

Facilities

Las Tunas has a handful of:

  • Small seafood restaurants and comedores
  • Simple cabañas and budget accommodation
  • No banks or ATMs — bring cash

Getting There

Las Tunas sits on the coastal highway between Manglaralto and Montañita. Buses on the La Libertad–Montañita route pass through. By car from La Libertad, allow about 45 minutes north along the Ruta del Spondylus.
