ECUAWIKI âș OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES âș JUNGLE HIKING
While the Santa Elena Peninsula is predominantly semi-arid and dry, the northern end of the Ruta del Spondylus â particularly around Ayampe and the cloud forest transition zone â offers increasingly lush, jungle-like terrain that contrasts dramatically with the drier southern Peninsula.
Where to Find Jungle Conditions
Ayampe Cloud Forest and surroundings â As you head north from Montañita toward Ayampe, the landscape becomes progressively greener and more humid. The hills above Ayampe support dense subtropical wet forest with large trees, lianas, and abundant wildlife.
Dos Mangas â A community inland from Manglaralto that offers guided hikes into a lush river canyon with waterfalls. One of the Peninsula's most popular eco-hiking destinations.
Loma Alta Ecological Reserve â At higher elevations, the forest becomes denser and cloud forest conditions prevail.
What to Expect
Jungle hiking in this area involves:
- Dense vegetation; trails can be overgrown
- Slippery, muddy paths especially after rain
- High humidity (70â90% typical)
- Excellent birdwatching and possible wildlife (monkeys, coatis, reptiles)
- Stream crossings in some routes
- Waterfalls and swimming holes (Dos Mangas has famous pools)
Dos Mangas Waterfall Hike
The Dos Mangas hike is one of the most popular jungle hikes on the Peninsula. A local guide is required (hired in the village) and costs approximately $10â$20 per person. The hike takes 2â4 hours round trip and leads through river canyon and forest to a waterfall and swimming pool.
Practical Tips
- Hire a local guide for any off-trail hiking
- Bring waterproof shoes or rubber boots (botas de caucho)
- Carry sufficient water even in humid conditions
- Insect repellent is essential â mosquitoes and insects are more active in wet forest
