ECUAWIKI › SPORTS › BODYBOARDING

Bodyboarding (also called boogie boarding) is a popular and accessible wave-riding activity on the Santa Elena Peninsula. Riders lie prone on a short foam board and ride breaking waves. It requires less skill than surfing to get started, making it popular with visitors and children.

Best Spots

Mar Bravo (Salinas) — The rougher waves on the north side of the Salinas peninsula create excellent bodyboarding shore dumps. Mar Bravo is famous for its powerful, close-shore breaking waves — great for experienced bodyboarders, though the strong shore break deserves respect.

Montañita — The main beach outside the primary surf break zone has wave conditions suitable for bodyboarding, particularly in front of the village. Some surf schools rent bodyboards.

Playa de Mar Bravo (Salinas) — A consistent wave that can be powerful; experienced riders only when large.

Equipment

Bodyboards can be rented from surf shops in Montañita for approximately $5–$10 per hour. Fins are optional but recommended for maneuvering in shore dumps. Board shorts or a rash guard are advisable to protect skin.

Safety

  • Respect the power of shore dump waves — they can injure beginners
  • Be aware of rip currents at beach breaks
  • Don't bodyboard near swimmers
  • At Mar Bravo, the waves can be very powerful; only enter if you are a strong swimmer
