Short-term rentals on the Santa Elena Peninsula cover everything from Airbnb-style beachfront apartments in Salinas to cabañas at Ayangue and shared hostal rooms in Montañita. This page covers how to find and book them.
Platforms
Airbnb
Available on the peninsula with the widest selection in Salinas and Montañita. Prices are in USD and tend to be higher than equivalent local-market nightly rates. Best for verified accommodation with clear photos and reviews.
Booking.com
Strongest for established hostals and hotels. Good for Salinas's main hotel strip. Better for last-minute bookings than Airbnb.
Facebook Marketplace / Groups
Many short-term and vacation rentals are advertised directly by owners on Facebook — often at significantly better prices than listing platforms. Search for «alquiler vacacional Salinas», «cabaña Ayangue», etc. The expat community Facebook groups for Santa Elena also share rental listings.
Direct / Local
In Ayangue, Manglaralto, Montañita, and the Ruta del Spondylus towns, many guesthouses and cabañas are not on any platform — you walk in, ask at the beach, or follow local signage. This works particularly well in low season.
Prices by Area (Approximate, 2024–2025)
| Area | Type | Low season | High season / Feriado |
|---|---|---|---|
| Salinas (Malecón/Chipipe) | 1BR apartment | $40–70/night | $80–180/night |
| Salinas | Hostal room | $20–35/night | $50–100/night |
| Ayangue | Cabaña | $25–50/night | $60–120/night |
| Manglaralto | Hostal/cabaña | $20–40/night | $50–80/night |
| Montañita | Hostal dorm | $10–18/night | $25–45/night |
| Montañita | Private room | $25–50/night | $60–120/night |
| Olón, Ayampe | Cabaña/guesthouse | $30–60/night | $70–130/night |
High season prices apply December–Carnaval and all major feriados. Carnaval and New Year are the absolute peak — prices can be 3× low season.
Booking Tips
- Book well in advance for feriados — particularly Carnaval, New Year, and the Cantonización de Salinas (December 22). Good properties fill months ahead.
- Verify location carefully — Salinas has hotels on both the calm bay side (Malecón, Chipipe) and a few on the Pacific side; confirm which side if it matters to you.
- Ask about air conditioning — in high season (December–April), air conditioning is important. Confirm it works before paying.
- Check internet if you're working remotely. In Montañita, hostal WiFi is often unreliable; consider mobile data backup.
- Cash is usually preferred for local direct bookings; platforms handle payment.
