Stand-Up Paddleboarding
Ayangue's calm bay and Olón's flat beach on calm mornings are the best stand-up paddleboarding locations on the route — both accessible, both safe, and boards rentable locally.

Overview

Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) on the Ruta del Spondylus works best in sheltered or calm conditions. The two best locations are Ayangue's protected horseshoe bay — calm year-round — and Olón beach on flat mornings before the afternoon wind picks up.

The open beaches at Montañita, San José, and Ayampe are too exposed for casual paddleboarding except in exceptional conditions. Wind and chop on the Pacific make SUP difficult and potentially dangerous on the open coast.

Best Locations

  • Ayangue bay — the best SUP location on the route; calm, sheltered, with marine life visible below (rays, turtles) for paddlers who look down; suitable for all abilities year-round
  • Olón beach — the long, flat beach has calm water on windless mornings in the warm season; afternoon wind typically makes conditions choppy by midday; best December–April before 10 am
  • Montañita bay — possible in small-surf conditions but not a primary SUP destination; board rentals available

Rentals

SUP boards are available for rent in Montañita from several operators on the main beach. Rates approximately $12–15 per hour. Boards are not available for rent in Ayangue or Olón independently — arrange rental in Montañita and transport the board, or ask at accommodation in those towns if any local operators have emerged.

Tips

  • Go in the morning — conditions are consistently better before 10 am throughout the route
  • Ayangue is the most reliable option year-round; the bay doesn't close out in swell or wind
  • If paddling Olón or an open beach, stay close to shore and within easy swimming distance if you fall
  • Sunscreen is essential — you are exposed on the board; UV is intense on the equatorial Pacific
