Overview
Montañita is Ecuador's primary surf school destination. Multiple operators work out of the main beach year-round, offering lessons on the beach break next to the point — a wave that is smaller, slower, and more forgiving than the famous Montañita Point, making it ideal for learning.
Surf schools cater to all levels, but the primary clientele is beginners — tourists who want to experience surfing while on the coast, with no prior experience required. Most schools include equipment (board, leash, and rash guard) in the lesson price.
What's Available
- Group lessons (1.5–2 hours): The standard offer. 3–6 students per instructor; instruction covers paddling, pop-up technique, wave selection, and surf etiquette; beach break learning wave; $20–25 per person including board
- Private lessons: One instructor, one student; faster progress; $30–45 per hour; recommended for those who want focused coaching
- Board hire: Longboards, funboards, and beginner foam boards available by the hour ($8–12) or day ($20–30) for those who want to practise independently after a lesson
- Multi-day courses: Several schools offer 3-day or 5-day progression courses with accommodation packages — usually the best value for visitors staying in Montañita specifically to learn
Choosing a School
All schools on the main beach offer roughly comparable instruction at similar prices. Practical considerations:
- Walk the beach and observe active lessons — is the ratio of students to instructor reasonable? Is the instructor in the water with students?
- Confirm the lesson includes a suitable learning wave, not the competitive point break zone
- Check that the board provided is appropriate — a longer, wider board is much easier for a first lesson
Conditions for Learning
The Montañita beach break provides consistent small to medium waves suitable for learning year-round. The best conditions for beginners are small, clean waves in the 0.5–1 m range, which occur most mornings outside of peak swell periods. In the peak swell season (December–April) larger waves may make learning harder; schools generally manage this by positioning beginners away from the main break.
