Overview

Kayaking on the Ruta del Spondylus has two distinct settings with very different characters. The first is the Manglaralto river estuary — a navigable mangrove waterway best at high tide, where the bird life is exceptional and the channels narrow into tunnels of root and vegetation. The second is Ayangue's horseshoe bay — open calm water in a sheltered cove, ideal for recreational paddling and exploration of the rocky headlands.

Both environments are accessible to paddlers of any experience level. Neither involves open Pacific conditions: the estuary is sheltered, and the bay is protected from swell year-round.

Where to Kayak

Manglaralto Estuary

The Río Manglaralto estuary at Manglaralto is the best wildlife paddling on the route. At high tide, the estuary is navigable for a kilometre or more inland, passing through old-growth mangrove stands that survive as one of the last intact patches on this stretch of coast.

Water conditions: Calm; tidal; best at high tide when channels are fully navigable
Wildlife: Herons, egrets, kingfishers, and wading birds; occasional fish jumping; crabs visible in the roots
Duration: 1–3 hours depending on exploration depth
Rentals: Kayaks available to rent in Montañita, approximately 15–20 minutes south; ask at beach operators or hostels
Tips: Check the tide before setting out; at low tide the upper estuary becomes too shallow to paddle. Early morning offers best bird activity and calm water.

Ayangue Bay

Ayangue's protected horseshoe bay is ideal for casual sea kayaking. The bay is calm year-round, and the two rocky headlands at each end can be circumnavigated at a comfortable pace, providing views of marine life below (rays and turtles are visible from the kayak in clear conditions) and access to small beaches inaccessible on foot.

Water conditions: Sheltered, calm, minimal current inside the bay
Rentals: Available from several operators on the Ayangue beachfront
Duration: 1–3 hours; the full bay circuit takes approximately 1.5 hours at a relaxed pace
Tips: Paddle the headland areas for best marine life sightings; respect the snorkelers in the rocky zones

There are no established kayak tour operators on the estuary at Manglaralto; it is a self-guided experience. Ask at hostels in Manglaralto or Montañita for current rental options and transport of kayaks to the estuary.

Getting There

Manglaralto estuary: The estuary is at the northern end of Manglaralto town, walkable from the bus stop. Rent a kayak in Montañita and arrange transport, or ask locally in Manglaralto.
Ayangue bay: Ayangue is 30 km north of La Libertad on the E-15; buses from La Libertad take approximately 45 minutes.
