Overview

The Ruta del Spondylus runs along one of Ecuador's most productive stretches of Pacific coastline. Between Montañita and Ayampe, a series of beach breaks and point breaks face south and southwest, catching the same Southern Ocean swells that make Peru and Chile famous for surf. The result is a consistent, accessible, and remarkably varied surf corridor that operates year-round but peaks between December and April.

Montañita anchors the route. Its right-hand point break is the best-known wave in Ecuador and one of the most recognised in South America, with an international surf competition circuit, multiple surf schools, and a global community of regular visitors. But Montañita is not the whole story: quieter, less crowded breaks at Olón, San José, and Ayampe offer their own rewards — and none of them have Montañita's crowds.

The Breaks

Break Town Type Best level Peak season Notes
Montañita Point Montañita Right-hand point break Intermediate–Advanced Dec–Apr Ecuador's most famous wave. Long, fast right-hander; barrels possible in bigger swell.
Montañita Beach Montañita Beach break All levels Year-round More forgiving than the point. Best option for beginners using the schools.
Olón Olón Beach break Beginner–Intermediate Dec–Apr Sheltered and consistent. Quieter than Montañita. Long stretch of sand.
San José San José Beach break Intermediate Dec–Apr Open Pacific exposure. More powerful than Olón; no schools or rental here.
Ayampe Ayampe Beach break Intermediate Dec–Apr Cloud forest backdrop. Consistent peak-season swell. Laid-back atmosphere.
Manglaralto Manglaralto Beach break Beginner–Intermediate Dec–Apr Less-known alternative south of Montañita. Uncrowded.

Season

The primary swell window is December through April, when Southern Ocean swells generated by Antarctic and sub-Antarctic storms travel north and reach the Ecuadorian coast. These swells are generally larger, more consistent, and better-shaped than the smaller local windswells of the dry season.

May through November (the dry, cool season) is less consistent but not flat. Swells arrive intermittently, and some of the smaller breaks — particularly Ayampe — can fire on local groundswell even outside peak season. Montañita's beach break remains functional throughout the year.

Water temperature ranges from approximately 18–20°C in the June–October cool season to 23–25°C in the December–April warm season. A shortie is comfortable in peak season; a spring suit or full 2mm is advisable from June through September.

Surfing Schools & Hire

Surf schools operate year-round in Montañita, concentrated on the main beach. Typical offerings include:

  • Beginner group lessons — 1.5–2 hours in the whitewater and shore break; includes board and leash; prices from approximately $20–25 per person
  • Private lessons — one-on-one coaching; recommended for faster progress; from approximately $30–40 per hour
  • Board hire — longboards and funboards for beginners; shortboards and fish for intermediates; from approximately $8–12 per hour or $20–30 per day
  • Multi-day packages — several schools offer 3- and 5-day intensive packages including accommodation

There are no commercial schools at Olón, San José, or Ayampe. Bring your own equipment if surfing these breaks independently, or arrange transport of rental boards from Montañita.

Getting to the Breaks

All breaks on the route are accessible by the E-15 highway. From Montañita:

  • Olón — 5 minutes north by bus or moto-taxi; the beach is a short walk from the road
  • San José — approximately 30–40 minutes north by bus
  • Ayampe — approximately 45–60 minutes north by bus; ask the driver to stop

Buses run frequently throughout the day from Montañita toward Manta. Return buses can be flagged from the roadside.
