Photography La Península
Dawn at Anconcito port, flamingos at the Ecuasal salt flats, British-era oil town architecture at Ancón, and the point where two oceans meet — the peninsula has more photographic subjects per square kilometre than anywhere else on Ecuador's coast.

Best Subjects & Locations

Subject Location Best time
Fishing port at dawn Anconcito port 5:30–7:00am — boats returning, ice loading, fishermen at work
Flamingos & waterbirds Ecuasal salt flats, Mar Bravo (Salinas) Early morning Jun–Oct; avoid midday heat shimmer
British oil heritage architecture Ancón town Morning or late afternoon for soft light; cloudy days reduce harsh shadows
La Chocolatera — ocean currents Naval Base, Salinas tip Any time; drone (if permitted) gives the best ocean current visibility
Whale watching Ballenita cliffs, Salinas boat tours Jun–Sep; 8am–11am for flattest sea
Sea lions La Lobería, Salinas Dawn to midday before midday torpor sets in
Cliff portraits — Ancón / Anconcito Southern cliff faces Late afternoon golden hour
Street / market photography La Libertad Mercado Early morning; Terminal Pesquero at dawn

Tips

  • Dawn is everything — the best light, the most active subject matter (port, birds, sea lions), and the coolest temperatures all coincide in the first two hours after sunrise
  • Always ask before photographing individuals in market or fishing contexts — ¿Puedo sacar una foto? ("Can I take a photo?")
  • The garúa (dry season mist) creates diffused light — not ideal for landscapes but excellent for portraits
  • Flamingos at Mar Bravo require a long lens (400mm+) for frame-filling shots — they are shy and will flush if approached
