Dawn at Anconcito port, flamingos at the Ecuasal salt flats, British-era oil town architecture at Ancón, and the point where two oceans meet — the peninsula has more photographic subjects per square kilometre than anywhere else on Ecuador's coast.

Tips

  • Dawn is everything — the best light, the most active subject matter (port, birds, sea lions), and the coolest temperatures all coincide in the first two hours after sunrise
  • Always ask before photographing individuals in market or fishing contexts — ¿Puedo sacar una foto? ("Can I take a photo?")
  • The garúa (dry season mist) creates diffused light — not ideal for landscapes but excellent for portraits
  • Flamingos at Mar Bravo require a long lens (400mm+) for frame-filling shots — they are shy and will flush if approached
