Overview
Salinas has been a sailing hub on Ecuador's Pacific coast for decades, driven by the presence of the Navy Base and the Salinas yacht community. The Club de Yates de Salinas (Salinas Yacht Club) operates on the malecón and is the anchor of recreational sailing on the peninsula.
Sailing conditions in Salinas Bay are characterized by:
- Protected bay on the northern (bay) side — manageable for smaller craft and day sails
- Afternoon thermal from June–November (15–25 kn) for good sailing wind
- Open Pacific access from La Chocolatera for offshore passages toward Galápagos or south toward Peru
- Year-round use — even the calmer beach season has some wind for light-air sailing
Salinas is a waypoint for cruising boats transiting the Pacific. The harbour offers some services for blue-water yachts.
Operators & Charters
Sailing charters and excursions operate from the Salinas malecón. These range from sunset sails on the bay to full-day whale-watching charters (June–September). Operators change seasonally — ask at the malecón or at the yacht club for current offerings.
