The Represa Velasco Ibarra is a seasonal reservoir and wetland of about 400 ha, about 3 km inland, on the border of La Libertad and Salinas (José Luis Tamayo parish). It was built in the 1950s and fills with water from the Las Vegas, Salado, Tambo and Tortuga streams in the rainy season.
Nature
The water is semi-saline, and the surroundings are dry forest and scrub (muyuyo, palo santo, guasango) with small farms. It attracts local and migratory water birds and is listed in Ecuador's wetland inventory.
