The Museo Paleontológico Megaterio at La Libertad's state university, UPSE (Universidad Estatal Península de Santa Elena), is described as Ecuador's first paleontology museum.

The find

In November 2003, works at Tanque Loma in La Libertad uncovered a remarkable Ice Age deposit: 345 complete bones and 2,969 fragments of megatherium (giant ground sloth), mastodon, glyptodont, American horse, giant llama and other animals, dated to between 30,000 and more than 50,000 years ago. The museum displays the finds.

Did you know…?
📊 …La Libertad fits about 112,000 people into roughly 25 km² — one of the densest cantons in Ecuador?

Visiting

The museum is on the UPSE campus. Check opening hours with the university before you go.
