Overview

The Río Manglaralto estuary at Manglaralto contains one of the last stands of old-growth mangrove on the Santa Elena stretch of coast — a dense, canopied waterway navigable at high tide by small boat or kayak. The experience is genuinely wild by coastal Ecuadorian standards: narrow channels threading between root systems, birds calling from the canopy, and the complete absence of other tourists.

Mangrove boating here is an informal activity. There are no organised tour operators at the estuary. Access is by small fishing boat with a local guide arranged in the village, or by kayak if you bring or rent one from Montañita.

What to Expect

At high tide, the estuary channels are navigable for approximately 1–2 km inland. The water is calm and tannin-brown under the canopy. The banks are dense mangrove root systems — habitat for crabs, small fish, and birds. At low tide the upper estuary empties completely; timing your visit around the high tide is essential.

Wildlife commonly encountered:

  • Great blue herons, little blue herons, tricolored herons — fishing from root perches
  • Snowy and great egrets — prominent white birds often visible ahead of the boat
  • Amazon and green kingfishers — fast, jewel-coloured birds following the water's edge
  • Crabs — visible in the root systems; several species including mangrove crab
  • Mullet and small fish — jumping ahead of the boat
Did you know…?
🏄 …an hour up the coast, Montañita's right-hand point break is one of the most consistent waves in Ecuador?

Arranging a Trip

Ask at local fishermen's area or accommodation in Manglaralto for a guide with a small boat. A typical 1.5–2 hour estuary trip costs approximately $15–25, negotiated directly. Kayak-based access: rent a kayak in Montañita (see Kayaking) and paddle to the estuary, which is at the north end of Manglaralto town, accessible directly from the coast.

Getting There

Manglaralto is approximately 80 km north of La Libertad on the E-15. Buses from the Sumpa Bus Terminal (Santa Elena) or Montañita (approximately 20 minutes south) stop in Manglaralto throughout the day.
