Overview
The E-15 coastal highway that forms the Ruta del Spondylus is paved, well-maintained, and rideable its full length. Cycling the route is a genuine option for active travellers — either as day rides between towns or as a multi-day coast-to-coast journey. The road is mostly flat south of Montañita and hillier on the northern section toward Ayampe and Las Tunas where the terrain becomes more dramatic.
Traffic is light in the early morning and heavier in the midday hours. The road shoulder is narrow in places — early starts and high visibility clothing are advisable.
Day Rides
Popular day cycling segments from Montañita:
- South to Manglaralto or Ayangue — relatively flat; ~15–30 km each way; low traffic
- North to Olón — 5 km; easy; mostly flat
- North to San José — approximately 25 km each way; moderate hills on the northern segment; good road with ocean views
Multi-Day Route
The full route from La Libertad to Las Tunas or beyond is approximately 160–200 km. A comfortable pace covers it in 3–4 days, based in a different town each night. The southern section (La Libertad to Montañita) is flatter and faster; the northern section (Montañita to Ayampe) has more climbing.
Bike Rental
Bicycles are available for rent in Montañita from several operators. Mountain bikes or hybrids are available; road bikes are rare. Rates approximately $8–15 per day. Confirm the bike has working brakes and gears before departing — mechanical standards vary.
There are no bike rental operators in other towns on the route; arrange rental in Montañita and carry on from there.
Tips
- Ride early — traffic is lightest before 8 am and the temperature is lower
- Carry more water than you think you need — the equatorial sun is intense even at coastal elevations
- The hills north of Montañita can be significant in both directions; budget extra time and energy for the northern section
- Most towns on the route have at least one small shop for snacks and drinks
