Overview
Olón is a small coastal village separated from Montañita by a single headland on the Ruta del Spondylus. It shares the same Ruta location but has a completely different character: quieter, family-oriented, and far less developed than its famous neighbour.
Olón is best known for the Iglesia de Olón, a white clifftop church visible from the beach and the road — one of the most photographed landmarks on the entire Ruta del Spondylus. The church sits on a promontory above the village with panoramic views of the coast.
Key Attractions
- Iglesia de Olón (Mirador) — clifftop white church; short hike to the summit; panoramic coast views
- Olón beach — sheltered cove beach; calmer and less crowded than Montañita
- Headland walk to Montañita — coastal path over the promontory (~20 minutes walk)
Character
Olón functions as the quiet alternative for travellers who want proximity to Montañita's surf without the nightlife and backpacker density. Families, couples, and those seeking calm regularly prefer to stay in Olón and walk or take a moto-taxi to Montañita for activities.
Getting There
All buses between La Libertad and Montañita pass through Olón (ask to stop at Olón). From Montañita: short walk over the headland path or moto-taxi.
