Overview
Ayangue is a fishing village and beach resort located on the Ruta del Spondylus (E-15) approximately 30 km north of La Libertad, in Santa Elena canton. It is best known for its horseshoe-shaped bay — a near-perfect natural cove that creates exceptionally calm, sheltered water unlike anywhere else on Ecuador's mainland Pacific coast.
The calmness of the water makes Ayangue the premier snorkeling and casual swimming destination on the Santa Elena coastline. The bay is protected from open-Pacific swell by two rocky headlands, giving turquoise, clear water even when the ocean is rough outside. Sea lions, rays, and diverse reef fish are common.
Activities
- Snorkeling — the bay's rocky outcrops and reef patches have excellent visibility; sea lions visit regularly
- Swimming — calm, safe water; suitable for families and non-swimmers
- Kayaking — rentals available on the beach
- Boat tours — day trips to offshore rocks and sea lion colonies
- Diving — some operators offer guided dives from Ayangue
Getting There
From La Libertad: buses run north on the E-15 (Ruta del Spondylus) toward Manglaralto and will stop at Ayangue on request (~45 minutes). Taxi from La Libertad approximately $12–18.
Accommodation
Ayangue has small guesthouses (hostales) and cabañas catering mainly to domestic visitors. Book in advance for weekends and high season.
