Kite Flying La Península
Reliable afternoon wind, wide open beaches, and the thermal that makes Salinas Bay famous for kitesurfing — also makes it one of the best kite-flying locations in Ecuador.
Overview
The same afternoon thermal wind that drives kitesurfing on Salinas Bay makes any open beach on the peninsula excellent for traditional kite flying. The wind builds reliably from around noon during the dry season (June–November) and is consistent on the bay side.
Best Spots
- Any open bay-side beach — the thermal is most consistent on the Salinas/Ballenita bay side
- Salinas malecón — open space; wind arrives reliably in the afternoon
- Chipipe beach — wide and open; fewer obstacles than the main malecón strip
Kites are sold by vendors in Salinas, particularly during high season. Bring string and a good-quality kite for the strongest wind days.
Season
Best from June–November during the windy dry season. Possible year-round but less reliable December–May.
