Official Certified Translation
Documents submitted to Ecuadorian government institutions (Cancillería, Registro Civil, courts, universities) must be translated by a traductor oficial — a translator officially accredited by the Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores. Only these certified translations are accepted for legal purposes.

...you need a certified translator. These are typically based in Guayaquil and in La Libertad. The immigration lawyer or gestor you work with will usually have contacts with reliable certified translators.

Informal Translation
For everyday needs — understanding a document, communicating with a landlord, navigating a medical appointment — you don't need a certified translator. Options:
- Spanish-speaking expats in the community — many residents are fluent in both languages and willing to help informally
- Expat community Facebook groups — good for finding bilingual residents or referrals
- Bilingual staff at larger hotels — in Salinas and Montañita, hotel staff often speak English

Notarization

English Availability on the Peninsula
English proficiency is limited outside of the main tourist areas. In Salinas (tourist zone), Montañita, and the main hotels, English communication is possible. In La Libertad, Santa Elena, and all smaller towns, Spanish is needed. Medical professionals typically speak only Spanish.
Basic Spanish phrases are invaluable for daily life on the coast. Even limited Spanish competence — numbers, please/thank you, basic questions — significantly improves the experience of living here.
