ECUAWIKI › PLACES TO VISIT › PARQUE HISTÓRICO ANCÓN

Ancón is a small town on the Santa Elena Peninsula with remarkable historical depth — it was the site of Ecuador's first commercial oil extraction in the late 19th century, and is home to one of South America's most important prehistoric burial sites. The Parque Histórico Ancón encompasses the heritage area around the old oil fields, the Amantes de Sumpa Museum, and the coastal cliffs.

The Amantes de Sumpa

The most famous find at Ancón is the "Lovers of Sumpa" (Amantes de Sumpa) — a pair of human skeletons dating back approximately 3,500 years, found locked in an embrace. Discovered in 1975, they are considered among the oldest and most poignant archaeological finds in Ecuador. The Amantes de Sumpa Museum on site displays the original burial along with pre-Columbian artifacts from the region.

The Oil Heritage

Ancón holds a unique place in Ecuadorian industrial history. In 1911, the first commercial oil well in Ecuador was drilled here by the Anglo Ecuadorian Oilfields company. Rusting pump jacks and early industrial equipment still dot the landscape, giving Ancón a surreal, frontier-industrial character unlike anywhere else on the Peninsula. This petroleum heritage site is part of the broader Parque Histórico concept.

The Ancón Cliffs

See Ancón Cliffs — the dramatic sea cliffs south of town offer panoramic views over the Pacific. The cliffs are part of the same geological formation that includes the bitumen seeps at Anconcito Bitumen Cliffs.

The Ancón Dry Forest

The inland slopes around Ancón support a fragment of Ecuador's dry tropical forest (see Ancón Dry Forest), with distinctive cacti, palo santo trees, and endemic bird species. Birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts will find this an interesting contrast to the beach-focused attractions elsewhere on the Peninsula.

Visiting Ancón

Ancón is about 15–20 minutes from Santa Elena city by road. There is no regular bus service to the oil fields themselves; a taxi or private vehicle is recommended. The Amantes de Sumpa Museum has set hours (check locally as these change) and charges a small entrance fee. The wider area can be explored on foot or by car.
